Defender of the Dharma: Tales of a Buddhist Murderer

This is a short story about a man I met in Darjeeling a few years ago. It is entirely true,though I changed some of the details to protect the identity of 'Johnny Hill.'

 

Pilgrimage in Search of the Present Moment

  These excerpts from a longer piece tell the tale of my wandering aimlessly into the mountains in Sikkim specifically with the aim of having no aim, an exercise in abiding in the present moment without goal.
   On my second day out I happened to a village and to the very house where a high incarnate lama was due to arrive. When he enquired how I happened to this house, his response was a tremendous laugh. "No looking," he said. "No looking—finding!" These writings describe my growing relationship with this enigmatic spiritual master.
